Light curtains, safety laser scanners and industrial LiDAR all use optical sensing, but they solve very different problems. The right starting point is what must be protected, detected or controlled in the application.
A light curtain creates an optical protection plane. It is typically used where an operator must frequently reach into or pass through a hazardous machine opening.
A safety laser scanner monitors configurable two-dimensional protection fields, making it suitable when the protected area is wider, irregular or changes with the machine state.
Industrial LiDAR provides scan data for sensing, measurement, obstacle detection and navigation-related integration rather than a certified personnel-protection function.
For compatible safety light curtain applications, a safety relay module can monitor the input signals and provide safety-related control outputs according to the selected relay model and machine-control design.
